Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) Silver Award

We are excited to be recognised as a primary school that shows commitment to the teaching and learning of science. Duncombe staff and pupils have been working extremely hard over the past year to raise the standards in science at the school and we have earned the PSQM Silver Award

The PSQM aims include:

  • To raise the profile of science in primary schools
  • To provide schools with a framework and professional  support for developing science leadership, teaching and learning
  • To celebrate excellence in primary science
  • To work with existing and facilitate new networks across the UK and wider to provide local support for primary science
  • To assemble and make accessible to the wider science education community a rich data base of current practice in primary science

International Schools Award

We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the British Council International School Award, which recognises schools that have excelled in the area of international learning. The award is an internationally recognised accreditation, awarded to schools which forge links with partners overseas and add an international dimension to the curriculum. Through working on joint projects and developing international elements to lessons, pupils (and teachers) are given a fresh perspective on the world and their place in it. Taking part in the Award:

  • celebrates links with other schools around the world
  • teaches pupils about other countries and cultures
  • prepares pupils for living and working in the global economy
  • enhances teaching standards through sharing best practice and teaching methods
  • leads to a new outwardly facing perspective and ethos for the school as a whole

The report praised the cross-curricular nature of our international work, and the way it addresses global themes. They commented:

“Your ability to embed internationalism into clearly defined areas of your curriculum in apparently such an effortless manner clearly demonstrates your commitment to introducing and maintaining excellent practice across the board.”

Investors in People Gold Award

In 2017, we awarded the Gold standard for Investors in People, which is only achieved by the top 7% of organisations. This internationally recognised accreditation acknowledges the good practice at Duncombe in leading, supporting and managing people within the school. Artsmark Gold Award

We are delighted that we have recently been awarded Gold Artsmark status. We had to undergo a rigorous application process, followed by a validation visit from a professional arts consultant. It demonstrates that we:

  • have an excellent arts and cultural offer
  • are forward thinking and open to development
  • are committed to investing in our staff and young people
  • are committed to listening to our students and providing opportunities for our community
  • have an effective approach to building sustainable relationships with arts and cultural organisations
  • value the arts and culture through a broad and balanced curriculum

Eco-Schools Silver Award

For the past three years, Duncombe has been working towards the Silver Eco Award which we were delighted to achieve at the end of the last year. To win this award, Duncombe had to prove it was an environmentally-friendly school in a number of ways. For example, we carried out a review of the school, asking 'how environmentally friendly is Duncombe at the moment?' Then we used this information to form a school action plan. 

Perhaps most importantly, we formed an eco-committee (who you will recognise as our amazing 'Green Team'), to help keep Duncombe on the green and narrow! Together with one of our governors, Mick Holloway, the Green Team met every half-term to discuss important issues relating to the environment. These meetings have been chaired by a different member of the Green Team each week and the minutes have been recorded. 

The Green Team have also carried out a range of important duties around the school including monitoring the energy saved through our amazing solar panels, litter picking at playtimes and ensuring that every child, parent and member of staff at the school understands which litter can and can't be recycled. They have done an impressive job! 

Leading Parent Partnership Award

In 2017 Duncombe was re-awarded the Leading Parent Partnership Award >The purpose of this award is to help focus and acknowledge the school's work with parents and families. Home is the greatest influence on a child’s educational performance and at Duncombe we want to do everything we possibly can to help parents and families support their children. The report highly praised the extensive work we do with children and their families.

The LPPA is a nationally recognised award achievable by schools who work very closely with the families of their pupils. At Duncombe Primary we feel that by achieving this award it has made the work that we do with families even better. It has enhanced our communication and built more activities for families in school. As you know we constantly strive to improve at Duncombe and completing this award has helped us do that.

"Duncombe School is very much at the centre of the local community. Support for parents is available throughout their lives. With its many links to outside agencies, the school is able to provide prompt support for parents and families who have a wide range of needs, e.g. health problems, immigration issues, seeking employment and/or finding suitable housing, challenging home lives, DV etc." LPPA report 2017

Duncombe has been awarded this certificate in recognition for our commitment to hosting successful work experience placements. Well done to all of those involved!
